Marine Fabric
Marine fabrics are the high-quality textiles developed by Soledad Marine Textile® after extensive testing and certification processes. These fabrics are shipped to you as bulk marine fabrics based on the number of sqm you require and order, allowing you to design and create your own marine textile solutions.
Perfect for boat interior design studios or boat upholstery specialists and ateliers, these fabrics ensure premium service and an exceptional final product tailored to your customer's unique needs.
What Makes Marine Fabric Different from Standard Outdoor Fabric?
Until recently, marine fabrics were often equated with general outdoor fabrics. However, outdoor textiles are not specifically engineered to endure year-round exposure to harsh marine environments. They are not designed to withstand constant weathering, sunshine, the corrosive effects of salt, and the moisture-fungi combination that accelerates damage and decay. Marine performance fabrics play a crucial role beyond aesthetics—they protect and preserve other boat components, ensuring both durability and a healthier environment on board.
Soledad Acqua and Istra Extra are both waterproof marine fabrics, patented and developed by Soledad. The key difference lies in their intended use:
- Soledad Acqua is designed primarily for outdoor applications, making it ideal for harsh marine environments.
- Istra Extra, on the other hand, is thinner and specifically suited for indoor upholstery, such as mattresses with sponges. It provides excellent protection for the sponge against moisture and deterioration.
However, both Istra Extra and Soledad Acqua are laminated on the inside, which enhances its waterproofing but reduces breathability compared to Soledad One.
Soledad One stands out as an organic, water-resistant, and quick-dry fabric, offering superior breathability and comfort especially when combined with our Aircore filling.
What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant fabrics?
When it comes to marine textiles from Soledad Marine Textile®, understanding the difference between waterproof and water-resistant fabrics is key to selecting the right materials for your boat upholstery, boat cushions, or boat mattresses.
-
Waterproof fabric: Fabric which has laminated with another layer of waterproof flammable material. Waterproof fabrics from Soledad Marine Textile® like Istra Extra are designed to create a complete barrier against water. These fabrics do not allow water to penetrate, making them ideal for boat cushions and other marine applications where total protection from water is needed. They are perfect when your filling is made of sponge, as sponge needs to be protected from humidity as not to deteriorate and loose its shape. Soledad's waterproof materials ensure that no moisture gets through, which is perfect for maintaining the integrity of boat upholstery in extremely wet conditions, whether from heavy rain, splashing waves, or other sources of water exposure.
- Water-resistant fabric: Fabric which has a dye-house process coated by a non-flammable and non-toxic chemical. It resists water until a certain level. Water-resistant fabrics from Soledad Marine Textile®, on the other hand, provide a level of protection that repels water but may still allow some moisture to seep in under prolonged or heavy exposure. Water-resistant fabrics are typically treated with a coating that makes water bead off the surface, making them well-suited for boat upholstery and boat mattresses that do not face constant or extreme wet conditions. Our Aircore filling product is a perfect solution for boat upholstery when paired with the water-resistant Soledad One marine fabric, offering a reliable combination of water resistance and comfort for marine environments. While they provide considerable protection from light splashes and humidity, they may not be entirely effective in heavy downpours or when exposed to water for long durations.
Choosing between waterproof and water-resistant fabrics from Soledad Marine Textile® depends on the specific needs of your marine environment. For boat upholstery and cushions exposed to frequent water contact or needing full protection, Soledad's waterproof fabrics are the best choice. However, for areas where comfort and breathability are also important, and exposure to water is minimal or occasional, Soledad's water-resistant fabrics offer an excellent balance of protection and comfort.

Soledad Acqua Marine Fabric is engineered to provide complete waterproof protection, ensuring that water never penetrates the outer layer, keeping the material entirely dry. On the other hand, water-resistant fabrics like Soledad One allow water to penetrate but dry quickly. Due to its organic composition, Soledad One is more breathable and remains cooler under the sun, making it more comfortable during high temperatures. The waterproof nature of Soledad Acqua makes it ideal for upholstery with sponge and foam fillings, as it protects its shape from sea water and rain, while the breathability of Soledad One pairs perfectly with Aircore filling.
